LOVER MERMAN: Thai BL Takes the Plunge Into Mythology

Over the past few years, Thai Boys’ Love (BL) dramas have become a global phenomenon, constantly pushing creative boundaries. Once focused mainly on contemporary and realistic romances, the genre is now venturing into new territory — exploring the realms of fantasy and myth. Vampires, ghosts, ancient gods, and protective spirits have begun to populate screens, giving BL storytelling a whole new dimension.

It’s within this wave of reinvention that LOVER MERMAN emerges — a series that reimagines the myth of the merman to tell a love story between two worlds. Blending emotion, cinematic beauty, and Thailand’s natural landscapes, the production promises an experience as visual as it is emotional.

A Love Between Two Worlds

“We’ve always loved stories that blend emotion with imagination,” the creators explain. “The idea of mermen felt fresh and meaningful because it allowed us to talk about love that exists between two different worlds. The ocean is full of mystery and emotion, and it reflects the kind of love story we wanted to tell — deep, unpredictable, and full of heart. Maybe it’s the dreamer in all of us that wanted to see what happens when love meets the sea.”

A Fresh Take on the BL Universe

For the creative team, LOVER MERMAN aims “to bring something new — something that feels like a fairytale but still real at its core. The series combines romance, fantasy, and Thai culture with a cinematic approach that BL fans may not have seen before. “We wanted people to not only fall in love with the characters, but also with the feeling of the story,” they add.

Emotion First

When asked how they’ll know LOVER MERMAN has achieved its goal, their answer is simple: “When people tell us they felt something — that they were moved, that they smiled or cried — that’s when we know we’ve done our job. Of course, we love seeing fan art, edits, and messages from around the world, but when someone says, ‘This story touched my heart,’ that means everything. That’s the kind of connection we hoped for from the very beginning.”

Thailand as a Character of Its Own

To bring the underwater world to life, the team explored the country’s most stunning landscapes. “We wanted to capture the natural beauty of Thailand in a way that felt almost otherworldly. We spent months exploring coastal areas, underwater caves, and hidden lagoons. Every location became part of the story. The light, the colors, the sound of the waves — all of it shaped the mood of the entire series. We wanted the ocean to feel like another character.”

Extreme Filming Conditions

One of the most challenging — and rewarding — parts of production was directing the actors underwater. “All our actors trained in freediving for two years, and we didn’t use any stunt doubles. They learned to act, move, and breathe underwater while staying calm and expressive. It was exhausting, both physically and mentally, but they never gave up. There were moments of laughter, frustration, and pure joy. Watching them overcome every challenge together was something we’ll never forget. It felt like we all became a little family under the sea.”

Overcoming Technical Challenges

From water filming to special effects, costumes, and makeup, almost every aspect of production brought new obstacles. “We had to test every detail — from the merman tails to the camera movements,” the team recalls. “But our crew was incredible: patient, creative, and determined. It wasn’t always easy, but when we finally saw the scenes come alive on screen, we all cried a little. It made every challenge worth it.”
